Brothers Laki "Bill" (standing left) and George Sgourakis (in his mother's lap) with sister Voula were born in Arfara (Αρφαρά), a former municipality in Messenia, Peloponnese, Greece. As youths in Greece, they could not afford to visit the Greek Islands.
The brothers came to America and immigrated to Omaha in 1966. Their father thought that living the good life was learning to work honest and hard, and that would get you a long way. So that's what they did. Both brothers worked in a meat packing plant in South Omaha until they saved enough money to open the Greek Islands Restaurant in 1983.
